In the heart of Kyoto, a group of people found a cache of notebooks that date back to the late 1800s. The notebooks contained drawings and writings—fascinating artwork and writing that must be seen to be believed. They include pages from two books called Yamashita Treasure Signs and Symbols, which explain the meaning behind these very unique images. The text has been translated into English so you can learn more about this incredible find. The Yamashita Treasure is one of Japan’s most famous antiquities from the 19th century because it includes over 300 signs from what is now known as our zodiac. The treasure includes pre-Meiji artistry of Japanese design, calligraphy, metaphorical characters, and even text conveying the origin of the signs. The collection is named after its owner, Count , who discovered it in 1892. The Treasure includes watercolors of animals, fish, flowers, insects and plants drawn with profound respect for their beauty. The images tell stories and convey how to live in harmony with nature. The drawings include some of the most detailed renderings that have ever been seen of such fanciful creatures as the , , and . They also resemble animal and human forms from Japanese folklore, such as the shape-shifting tanuki, foxes and kitsune. The images found in the notebooks are strikingly similar to fantasy art today. They contain all the elements we love: great colors and graceful curves; impossibly intricate details; images that convey a story.There is also a forth book called Yamashita treasure scrolls with 9 scrolls of images inside it. It has 6 stags, 6 tigers, 6 birds and 6 dragons. A special plaque is attached to the top of the treasure. It was designed by , who devoted his life to research on Japanese folklore and is known as the father of Japanese art museum management in Japan.
